Once, a King went to a saint who was sitting under a tree outside the kingdom. King asked, “O revered one! Is there any medicine that can grant immortality? Please tell me.”
Saint replied, “O King! Cross those two mountains in front of you. You will find a lake there. Drinking its water will make you immortal.”
King crossed the mountains and found the lake. As he bent down to drink, he heard groaning sounds. He followed the voice and saw an old, weak man in pain.
When the king asked the reason, the man said, “I drank the water of this lake and became immortal. When I turned 100 years old, my son threw me out of the house. I have been lying here for 50 years without care. My son is dead, and my grandsons have grown old. I stopped eating and drinking, but still, I cannot die.”
King thought, “What is the use of immortality with old age? If only I could get both immortality and youth.”
King went back to the saint and asked for a solution, “Please tell me how I can gain immortality along with eternal youth.”
Saint said, “After crossing the lake, you will find another mountain. Beyond it, there is a tree with yellow fruits. Eat one and you will get immortality with youth.”
King crossed the mountain and found the tree with yellow fruits. As he reached to pluck one, he heard loud arguments and fighting.
Surprised, he saw four young men quarreling. King asked, “Why are you fighting?”
One of them said, “I am 250 years old, and the man next to me is 300 years old. He refuses to give me my share of property.”
When the king asked the other, he replied, “My father, who is 350 years old, is still alive and hasn’t given me my share. How can I give anything to my son?”
That man pointed to his 400-year-old father, who also complained of the same. They said that because of these endless disputes, the villagers had banished them from the village.
Shocked, King returned to the Saint and said, “Thank you, you have taught me the importance of death.”
Saint said, “It is because of death that love exists in this world. Instead of worrying about death, live each day and each moment joyfully.”
