Waving the Flag of Joy – Making the Most of What You Have

Waving the Flag of Joy - Making the Most of What You HaveNear a house, construction work had been going on for quite some time. Every day, little children would play a game of “train” by holding onto each other’s shirts.

Each day, one child would become the engine, and the others would be the coaches. Engine and coaches changed every day, but…

One small child, wearing only shorts, would always play the role of the GUARD, waving a cloth in his hand.

One day, a man who regularly watched the children playing called out to the child who always played the guard, and asked with curiosity:

“Child, you always play the guard. Don’t you ever wish to be the engine or one of the coaches?”

Child replied, “Uncle, I don’t have a shirt to wear, so how will the child behind me hold on to me? Who would stand behind me?”

Then, with full enthusiasm and joy, he added, “That’s why I always play the guard. I just want to be part of the game with everyone!”

Saying this, the boy went back to his friends, happily immersed in the play.

In that moment, there was neither a hint of complaint in the child’s voice, nor any sense of lack. His words and his situation taught me a profound life lesson…

We never have EVERYTHING in life.

That child could have sat and cried, angry at his parents, but instead, he found a solution to his situation.

What about us?

We worry about our looks, our height, the neighbor’s big car, the necklace someone else wears, low marks in exams, lack of language skills, personality, job troubles, or even business losses…

As long as we look for wholeness “outside”, we will always feel incomplete.
But the moment we connect with our own inner self, we begin to experience fullness in every situation, and we feel joy.

Comparison and envy limit our lives.

Everyone has their own DESTINATION, their own PACE AND JOURNEY.

Circumstances themselves are never the problem; problem arises when we don’t know how to rise above them.

Key Lessons:

  • Accept your reality and find creative solutions instead of resisting.
  • Focus on contribution, not complaints or limitations.
  • Embrace your uniqueness without comparing yourself to others.
  • True joy comes from within, not from what you possess.
  • Even in tough times, a content heart can find happiness.
