Two Wells – Mahatma’s Demand to a Miser!

Two Wells - Mahatma's Demand to a Miser!A man name Dharma used to live in a village. He was good person but didn’t like to spend money. He was a total miser. If anyone came to his home, he would not even bring them a glass of water.

One day a Mahatma came to his door and asked for one roti, but Dharma refused to give him anything at all.

Even after Mahatma refused to give him anything. Mahatma kept standing there. When Dharma saw this, he came out with half of roti to give him.

Seeing half roti, Mahatma said that now i will not eat half of roti but will eat to my heart’s content.

Listening to this, Dharma went inside without giving anything.

Mahatma quietly at his door, hungry and thirsty, all night.

In morning, when Dharma saw him standing at his door even after whole night, he thought that if i don’t feed him to his fill, he may die of thirst and hunger and i will be blamed for this.

I will be accused to killing a Mahatma (saint) without any reason.

Dharma went to Mahatma, “Come inside, you can eat to your heart’s content.”

On hearing this, Mahatma said, “Now, i don’t want to eat food. dig a well for me.”

“What!!”, Dharma exclaimed.

He refused to dig a well and went inside.

Mahatma stood there quietly at his door throughout the night, hungry and thirsty.

Next morning too, when Dharma saw Mahatma standing outside, he thought if i don’t dug well then, this Mahatma will surely die of hunger.

Dharma thought a lot and told Mahatma, “i will dug a well for you but don’t say anything more than this.”

“No, not one, now you have to dig two wells.”, said Mahatma.

Dharma was definitely a miser, not a fool. He thought if i refuse this, don’t know what he will demand next.

Therefore, Dharma thought it is best to quietly get two wells dug.

When wells were dug and ready, filled with water, Mahatma said to Dharma, “Out of two wells, i am giving one to you and i will keep other with me.”

Dharma agreed.

Mahatma continued, “I am going somewhere for a few days, but remember that you should not take even a drop of water from my well. Also, you have to let all villagers take water from your well daily.”

Dharma agreed and got a strong lid installed on mouth of Mahatma’s well. Mahatma left. All villagers started drawing water from Dharma’s well, every day.

People drew a lot of water but water in well didn’t decrease. Villagers were overjoyed to get clean and cool water.

After a year, Mahatma came to village again and asked Dharma to open his well.

When lid was removed, people were surprised to see that there was not even a drop of water in the well.

Mahatma said, “No matter, how much water is drawn from the well, it never dry but if the water is not drawn out from the well, well dries up.

But if for some reason water doesn’t dry up due to not drawing out the water from well, it will certainly rot and will be of no use.

Like water of well, wealth also has three movement.

Use, end or misuse.

If wealth is not used, then that wealth is similar to well water which was closed and will lie useless. It will not be possible to use it or someone else can misuse it.

Therefore, it is essential to make good use of wealth earned, in time.”

Dharma said, “I understand now, I have realized my mistake.”

Dharma had gained the right knowledge and right direction from this incident.
