Malukdas was an atheist. One day a Saint came to village and stayed there. Saint used to narrate Ramayana to people. Every morning and evening people used to visit him and enjoy Ram Katha.
One day, by chance Malukdas also reached there.
At that time, Saint was telling glory of Shri Ram and said – He gives food to hungry, clothes to naked and shelter to homeless.
Malukdas also heard and argued, “Forgive me! If i sit quietly and chant the name of Ram and do not do any work, will Shri Ram still provide food?”
Saint replied with full confidence, “He will definitely give.”
Another question arose in Malukdas mind and he asked, “What if i sit alone in dense forest?”
Saint said firmly, “Even then Shri Ram will give food.”
Malukdas understood the point and now he wanted to test if it’s true.
Next morning, Malukdas empty stomach went out to a dense forest. There were thorny bushes, tall trees all around.
When Malukdas reached middle of forest, sun was setting. He climbed and sat on top of a dense tree. Soon, darkness spread all around. He neither got any food, nor he got down from the tree. He sat there whole night.
Next day, in afternoon, in deep silence, Malukdas heard the sound of horses running. He got alert.
After a while, He saw that some government officials came there and stop under the tree where Malukdas was hiding on top. They all got down from their horses and decided to have food. At same time when officers tok out the food box from bag, a loud roar of lion was heard.
On hearing roar, officers got scared and ran away, leaving the food behind.
Malukdas was watching all this from the tree. He started waiting for lion but roaring lion went to other side. He was surprised at seeing food reaching there, in middle of dense forest. But then thought, “If i don’t get down and eat food, how will food reach me.”
Malukdas stayed hiding there.
After a while, a large group of dacoits were passing by. Seeing food in form of various types of dishes lying in shiny silver utensils under the tree, they stopped.
Leader of dacoits said, “We are hungry and here is food in beautiful boxes. Let’s eat it.”
Just then one of his man said, “It seems mysterious to me that food is being found in such decorated manner in middle of such dense forest. There might be poison in it.”
Hearing this, leader said, “Then person who bought it must be hiding somewhere nearby. Let’s search him first.”
On Leader’s order, bandits started searching here and there. Just then one bandit saw Malukdas hiding. He told Leader about it.
When Leader raised head and saw Malukdas, his eyes became red because of anger and he shouted, “You evil man! You sitting on top of tree after mixing poison in food! Come down right now..”
Malukdas got scared but didn’t get down and said from there, “Why are you blaming me unnecessarily? There is no poison in food.”
Leader asked his men to climb the tree and feed him food, to check if it was poisoned. In hurry, three dacoits climbed the tree and forced him to eat by threatening him to kill with knife.
Malukdas had to eat food. After this, he came down and told the whole story to dacoits. Listening to his story, dacoits didn’t kill him and left.
Malukdas was running away from food but work of God was such that he was forcibly fed the food. After this incident, Malukdas became a true devotee of God.
