Smart Sales Story - Salesman Trick to Sell Pair of ShoesA shoe shop owner needed a salesperson. Hoping to find a good one, he advertised in the newspaper. Many candidates came in response, but none impressed the owner. They all hesitated – whether while speaking, showing the shoes or quoting prices.

Finally, only one candidate remained. The shop owner gave him a pair of shoes and asked him the same question he had asked the others, “Can you sell this pair of shoes for ₹500?”

Candidate replied, “Sir, I can sell it for ₹550.”

Shop owner was impressed and said, “If you can really do that, the job is yours, with a higher salary.”

Candidate agreed and waited in the shop for a customer. Soon, a customer entered. The candidate smiled, welcomed him, and said, “Sir! How can I help you today?”

Customer said he wanted to see some shoes. Candidate showed him several pairs and mentioned their prices. The customer was browsing while the candidate enthusiastically kept showing more options.

Eventually, he showed the pair given to him by the owner and said, “These are the best and most durable shoes in the entire store.”

He praised the shoes highly and even brought out another similar pair, saying, “Only two pairs like this are left!”

Customer liked them and asked for the price.

Candidate said, “These are very reasonably priced. We were selling all pairs for ₹600, but since only two are left, we’ll give them to you for ₹550.”

Shop owner was watching everything carefully.

Customer said, “They are good, but a bit too expensive.”

Candidate replied, “Sir, these shoes are of excellent quality and durability. You won’t find such shoes anywhere else.”

Customer finally said, “You’re right, I like the shoes, but I don’t have enough money right now.” and began to leave.

Candidate smiled and said, “Sir, please don’t worry about the money. You are our valued customer. If you like the shoes, you can pay the remaining amount later.”

Customer hesitated and said, “But…”

Candidate interrupted gently, “No buts. How much do you have right now?”

Customer replied, “Only ₹450.”

“No problem, Take the shoes and pay the rest later.” said the candidate.

He packed the shoes and gave them to the customer. Customer paid ₹450, thanked him, and left with the new shoes.

Candidate handed the ₹450 to the shopkeeper, who was now angry.

Shop Owner said, “What did you do?! You were supposed to sell them for ₹550, and you gave them away for ₹450. That’s a ₹50 loss!”

The candidate calmly replied, “Don’t worry, sir. The customer will definitely come back with the remaining ₹100.”

“You think he will return? After making a ₹100 gain?”, the shop owner snapped.

Candidate replied confidently, “Yes sir, he will come back.”

“No way!”, said the shop owner.

“He will return, sir,” the candidate smiled and added, “Because I gave him two shoes for the same foot.”

Shop owner stared at him for a moment, then broke into a smile and said, “You’ve got the job, my friend and a higher salary too, as promised!”


This story reminds us that: True success – needs presence of mind, people skills and bold decisions.
