A cowherd used to take his cows to graze in the forest outside his village. In that forest, there was an ashram where a saint lived. Saint would meditate, chant mantras and perform spiritual practices every day.
Cowherd often saw the saint doing all this but couldn’t understand why. He was young and curious, so one day he went to the ashram and asked the saint, “What is it that you do every day?”
Saint replied, “I worship God. Through daily prayer, meditation and chanting, one can have the vision of God.”
Hearing this, the cowherd thought, “I should also try to see God.”
So, he left the ashram and went to a lonely spot under a tree. There he stood on one leg and began to meditate. After some time, he even stopped breathing, thinking, “I will stay like this until God appears before me.”
Seeing such intense devotion from the young boy, God became pleased very quickly. God appeared before him and said, “My child, open your eyes. I am standing before you.”
Without opening his eyes, the cowherd asked, “Who are you?”
God replied, “I am the same Lord for whom you are performing this penance.”
When the cowherd opened his eyes, he saw God but since he had never seen God before, he doubted whether this was really Him. To be sure, he tied God to a tree with a rope and ran to the saint’s ashram to tell him everything.
Saint was astonished and immediately went with the cowherd to that spot. When they reached the tree, the saint couldn’t see anyone there – only the cowherd could see God.
Saint said, “I can’t see anyone here.”
Cowherd asked God why this was so.
God replied, “I reveal myself only to those who worship me with selfless devotion.”
