Once upon a time, there was a famous painter. His art exhibitions attracted thousands of visitors and people never stopped praising his work.
One day, the painter began to wonder – Do people truly admire my art, or do they just say nice things to my face and criticize me behind my back?
To find out, he decided to do an experiment.
The next morning, he placed one of his paintings at a busy city square. Below it, he put a note:
If you see any mistake in this painting, please mark it.
That evening, when he returned, his heart sank. The painting was full of marks, hundreds of them. Disappointed and hurt, he quietly took his painting home.
This incident deeply affected him. He lost confidence, stopped painting and even began avoiding people. A few days later, his friend came to visit. Seeing the painter’s sadness, friend asked what was wrong. Painter shared the whole story.
After listening carefully, the friend suggested, “Let’s try again. Put another painting in the same place, but with a different note.”
Painter agreed. Next morning, he displayed a new painting in the square. This time the note read:
If you see a mistake in this painting, please correct it.
In the evening, the painter and his friend returned. To his surprise, the painting was exactly the same as in the morning – untouched.
Painter was puzzled, seeing his puzzled face, the friend explained, “Do you see the difference? Anyone can point out mistakes and many people do. But only a few know how to correct them. Don’t let the opinions of faultfinders discourage you. The problem was never with your art; it was with asking the wrong people for feedback.”
The painter finally understood. He returned to doing what he loved most, painting.

Don’t take advice from everyone. If you need guidance, seek it from people who truly understand the field.
