Seth Dhaniram was a respected, thoughtful and wealthy man. He had two sons – Mohan and Sohan. With time, Dhaniram grew old and decided to divide his property.
As soon as the process of division began, disputes arose between the two sons. The biggest conflict was over a luxurious four-bedroom house located in the city. Both Mohan and Sohan wanted that house. The argument escalated so much that one day, the two were ready to fight each other to the death.
Dhaniram, seeing this scene, burst out laughing. Seeing him laugh, both sons were shocked.
Forgetting their fight, they asked, “Father, why are you laughing in such a situation?”
Father said seriously, “You both are fighting over a small piece of land. Come, let me show you a priceless treasure. But there’s one condition – if you two fight along the way, I will turn back immediately.”
Hearing about the treasure, Mohan and Sohan were tempted, but respecting their father’s wish, they decided to travel in harmony and understanding.
Three of them set off for the village.
On the way, they found a bus, but only two seats were available. They shared the seats – Mohan sat for a while, then Sohan did. After a 10-hour journey, they reached the village.
In the village, Dhaniram took them near a large mansion. The mansion was deserted, its walls crumbling, and pigeons had made nests in every corner. Dhaniram started crying upon seeing the mansion.
Sons asked, “Father, why are you crying?”
Dhaniram replied, “Do you remember your childhood? This is the mansion for which I once fought with my elder brother. I got the mansion, but I lost my brother forever. He went to a far-off land and never returned. Time passed, and one day, we too had to leave this mansion.”
Then he asked, “Son, the seat we sat on in the bus – did it become ours forever?”
Sons replied, “No, Father. The bus journey continues. Today we sat on it, tomorrow someone else will.”
Dhaniram smiled and said, “That’s what I want to explain. This house, land, property, wealth – it’s all with us for just a little while. Someone else had it before us, we have it now, and someone else will have it later. Just like passengers change on a bus seat, so does this wealth in life.
Remember – don’t sacrifice your precious relationships for something that lasts only a short while. Look at this mansion – I broke ties with my loved ones for it, and today it’s home to pigeons. Only when you walk in harmony in life will love and happiness remain.”
Hearing this, both sons fell into their father’s lap and wept. They had understood the truth.
Moral:
Life is a journey, and every resource – wealth, property, luxury – is merely a temporary rest stop. Relationships are priceless. Losing them over small selfish desires is foolishness. Just as bus seats change hands, so does everything in this world. Walk with love and harmony – that is the real treasure.
