Once, a small boy got angry with his mother and, in a fit of rage, shouted, “I hate you!” Immediately, fear took over him, he was worried his mother would scold him.
In panic, he ran away from home and wandered toward the nearby hills, still fuming with anger.
Alone among the trees and rocks, he began shouting again, “I hate you! I hate you!” To his astonishment, a voice from the hills replied, “I hate you! I hate you!”
The boy froze.
He had never heard an echo before and thought there was another child up there, shouting the same words back at him.
Terrified, he ran straight home and told his mother, “Mother, there is a bad child in the hills who keeps shouting, “I hate you!” at me!”
His mother smiled knowingly.
She held his hand and led him back to the hills. Once there, she gently said, “Now, shout something good. Say – I love you.”
Boy hesitated for a moment but then obeyed. He shouted, “I love you!” From the mountains, the words returned clearly, “I love you! I love you!”
Still confused, the boy looked at his mother.
She knelt beside him and explained, “Do you see, my son? That is an echo. The voice you hear is your own – it comes back after bouncing off the hills.
Life is very similar. The way you speak, and act is reflected back to you. If you spread love, kindness, and respect, you receive the same in return. If you spread anger or hatred, that too comes back to you.”
Boy understood at last. From that day, he tried to speak gently, act kindly and treat others with love, remembering the lesson of the echo and how life mirrors our actions.
Learning:
Life reflects the energy we put into it. Our words, actions and attitudes come back to us, just like an echo. Speak and act with love, kindness, positivity and the world will return the same.
