Once, two seriously ill men shared a hospital room. One of them had his bed placed next to the only window in the room, while the other was unable to move and had to lie flat on his back all day, with no view outside.
Each day, the man by the window would describe to his roommate what he could supposedly see outside.
Patient by window side would speak to his roommate about beautiful weather, a lovely park across the street and a serene lake with ducks gliding across the water. Children played nearby, floating little toy boats on the lake.
An elderly couple could often be seen walking hand in hand along the flower-lined pathways. In the distance, tall city buildings rose into the sky.
The man confined to bed would close his eyes and imagine it all, painting vivid scenes in his mind. It brought him peace and helped him cope with his difficult days.
Weeks passed. Then, one evening, the man by the window passed away quietly in his sleep.
Two days later, the bedridden man asked to be moved to the bed beside the window. The nurses agreed and helped him switch beds.
With great effort and pain, he propped himself up to finally look outside. But to his surprise, all he saw was a blank wall.
Shocked, he called nurse and asked, “How did my roommate describe such beautiful things outside when there’s only a wall?”
The nurse replied gently, “He was blind. He couldn’t even see the wall. He just wanted to brighten your days and give you hope.”
True joy often comes from making others happy — without expecting anything in return.
