A long time ago, in the city of Surat, Gujarat, there lived a merchant named Harinarayan. He was a renowned dealer in precious gems. His business was spread across many countries, and he was highly respected throughout Surat.
Harinarayan had two sons – Arun and Varun. Arun was proud of his wealth and status, while Varun was an honest and humble man. Along with pride, Arun was also filled with jealousy and dishonesty.
As time passed, Harinarayan grew old, and his sons began helping more in the business. Eventually, Harinarayan passed away, leaving the entire business in the hands of his two sons.
Being the elder, Arun started making business decisions on his own.
He began taking deceitful and dishonest decisions. Selling fake gems under the name of real ones – thus increasing his profits. But with that profit, his character darkened completely. Blinded by arrogance, he began treating his family harshly.
On the other hand, Varun, honest and wise, didn’t realize his brother’s deceit at first. But after seeing Arun’s behaviour change, he soon understood the whole truth. Deeply saddened by his brother’s actions, Varun tried to make him understand and bring him back on the right path, but he failed.
Instead, Arun became angry with Varun and began plotting to divide the business. Even in that division, he planned dishonesty. He created an atmosphere of conflict at home and, in the end, managed to seize Varun’s share of the business as well.
Heartbroken, Varun left the house and started his gem business anew elsewhere in the city. Built on the foundation of honesty, Varun’s business soon flourished. While his fame spread across India and abroad, Arun’s deceit was exposed. His reputation in the gem market collapsed, and his business shrank rapidly.
Eventually, no trader, not even in his own city wanted to deal with him. Arun lost everything: his money, his shop, even his home and was left destitute.
Now, filled with regret, Arun realized his mistakes. But fate had already played its hand, and recovery was not easy. Meanwhile, Varun, through honesty and hard work, rose from rags to riches.
When he heard about his brother’s miserable condition, he felt great sorrow. Forgetting the past, he rushed to his brother and, despite Arun’s hesitation, brought him and his family back home. Ironically, the same brother Arun had thrown into the streets was now lifting him up from the streets and sheltering him.
Moral:
Honesty and good deeds may take time to bear fruit, but dishonesty and arrogance always lead to downfall.
