In a forest lived an old owl, who was known for his wisdom. Animals of forest often used to come to him for advice.
There was a young crow, known for his boastfulness. Crow was proud of his shiny feathers and would brag about his cleverness to anyone who would listen.
One day, crow flew up to branch, where owl used to sit and said to owl, “I am the smartest bird in the forest. I can outwit anyone and steal food from other animals.”
Old owl turned his head towards crow and said, “Is that so? Tell me, what is it that makes you so clever?”
Crow puffed out his cheat and said, “I can steal juiciest fruits from the tallest trees and i can trick other animals into leaving their food unguarded. Still, no one can catch me.”
Owl blinked slowly and said, “But tell me, do you ever consider the consequences of your action?”
Crow laughed and said, “Why should i? I can get what i want and that all that matters.”
Wise old owl sighed, “You should be careful. Arrogance often leads to danger.”
Crow scoffed at owl’s words and flew off to look for food. As he soared through forest, he saw a large piece of bread lying on a rock.
Delighted at his find, he swooped down and grabbed the bread in his beak. But just as crow was about to fly away, a fox appeared from the bushes.
Fox called out to him and praised him saying, “Dear crow, i have heard your voice, you have such beautiful voice! Would you sing for me?”
Flattered by praise, crow decided to show off.
Forgetting about bread in his beak, he opened his mouth to sing. As soon as he opened his mouth, bread fell from his beak to the ground and fox quickly snatched it up and ran away.
Realizing he has been tricked, crow felt shame and then remembered owl’s words.
Crow flew back to owl and said, “You were right. because of my arrogance i lost my food.”
Owl nodded, “Wisdom is not just about being clever. It is about understanding the consequences of your actions and learning from your mistakes.”
Crow thanked owl and flew away, no longer boastful but humbled by lesson he learned.
